Rev. Edwin Hakel
Services for the Rev. Edwin H. Hakel, 82, of rural Fairmont will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will be at Center Chain Cemetery, rural Fairmont with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 of Fairmont and the Martin County VFW Post 1222.
Rev. Hakel died Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Fairmont Community Hospital. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Olson Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to service at the church.
Edwin Henry Hakel, son of Stephen and Emily (Zbitovsky)Hakel was born June 2, 1909, at Silver Lake, Minn., where he spent his childhood and graduated from high school. He then attended Macalester College in St. Paul, the University of Minnesota, Western Pastor's School in La Foret, Colo., the McPhail School of Music and the Minneapolis School of Music. He was a veteran of World War II having served as a Chaplain's Assistant for 34 months in the south Pacific. He married Alice V. Shivel on August 16, 1946, at Silver Lake and they made their home in St. Paul where he was ordained in Dec. of 1954 and served as Pastor of Cyril Congregational Church. From 1955-1960 he served the Congregational Church at Staples and Aldrich and from 1960-1973 he served the United Church of Christ at Sherburn and Ceylon and then moved to rural Litchfield where he served St. Matthews United Church of Christ at Forest City and Peace United Church of Christ at Eden Valley. In 1981 he retired and they moved to their home on South Silver Lake, rural Fairmont.
He held offices in the Northern Pacific Association and the South-western Association of the Congregational Conference of Minnesota; was President of the Sherburn-Dunnell PTA; was a member and officer of the Litchfield Area Male Chorus; was on the Board of Directors of the Meeker County Concert Association; was President of Meeker County American Cancer Society; was a recipient of the WCCO Radio Good Neighbor Award; was named Outstanding Citizen of Martin County in 1984; was a life member of the American Legion and served as Chaplain in several districts as well as State Chaplain in 1979; was a member of the North Central Camera Club council; was a life member of Kiwanis and served four terms as Lt. Governor in Division 2 and Division 7.
Survivors include his wife, Alice of Fairmont; son Richard Hakel and wife Patricia of Fairmont; daughter Polly Ann Albrecht and husband Blake of Willmar; nine grandchildren; brothers, Arthur Hakel and wife Rachel of Pleasant Hill, Calif. Milton Hakel of Arlington, Va., Ben Hakel of Silver Lake, Minn., several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
