Leland E. Derrick was born at Hollis, Oklahoma on April 14, 1901, the son of Joseph E. and Ada O. (Magee) Derrick. He married Delia May Thomas on April 14, 1923 and they had two sons.
He was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and served until 1945, attaining the rank of major. He was recalled to the U.S. Air Force in 1951 during the Korean conflict and received a promotion to lieutenant colonel during that period of service.
Derrick came to SWT as instructor in English in 1926 after having taught and served as an administrator at Sherwood, Texas High School. He held a bachelor of arts, master of arts, and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
During his 45 years (1926-1971) on the faculty and administrative staff at Southwest Texas (now Texas State University), Derrick held positions ranging from instructor in English to vice president of university affairs. He served twice as acting president.
Advancing through the ranks at SWT, he served as chairman of the English Department from 1954 to 1958, when he became dean of the Graduate School. Although he continued as dean of the Graduate School until his retirement, the vice-presidential title was added in 1965. He served as acting president of SWT from July 1965 to January 1969, and from April to September 1969.
He was an active member of the First Methodist Church of San Marcos and the San Marcos Rotary Club. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a past commander of the San Marcos American Legion Post.
The San Marcos community joined the university community in paying tribute to Derrick when April 21, 1971 was declared "Dr. Leland Derrick Day" both in the city and on campus.
On November 1,1980, an academic classroom building at SWT was officially dedicated as Leland E. Derrick Hall. Dr. Ralph Houston, distinguished professor of English and a close personal friend of the Derrick family, spoke at the dedication ceremony; he talked about Derrick's "prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude, hope, faith, charity" as recognizable characteristics of Derrick's character, but noted that underlying all of these was a sense of humor.
