Oliver Hix married Mary Fry, daughter of Wiley and Elizabeth Fry, about 1862 in Jackson County, Tennessee. They had one child, a daughter, Mary Melvina Hix/Hicks, who was born 11 April 1863. Mary Fry Hix died soon after the birth of her daughter.

On the 25th of August 1863, Oliver Hix enlisted as a private in Company G of the 8th Regiment of the Tennessee Cavalry. He fought for the Confederacy until December of 1864.

In 1865, Oliver Hix married his second wife, Permelia J. Smith. They had seven children:

There are four unmarked fieldstone graves next to Oliver Hix's marked grave.
