BOSTON ~ Charles M. Ashley a former tax collector for the town of Berkley, died Tuesday January 25, 2005 at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston. He was 70. He was the husband of Yvette Ashley.

Born in Taunton, Mr. Ashley attended grammar school in Berkley and Dighton High School, and eventually graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Mr. Ashley was a Teamsters' Union carpenter in Boston for 30 years before retiring. He subsequently was a courier for the Trans-Pro company of South Easton.

In addition to having once served as Berkley's tax collector, he was a member of the 4H Club. He raised his own sheep, sheared them and prepared the wood, and was a member the Wool Growers Association. He was an avid bridge player.

He was the son of the late Herbert and Clara (Munroe) Ashley, and the father of the late Valerie Barrie.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glenn Ashley of North Carolina and Charles Ashley of Arizona; four daughters, Dawn Hartment of New Jersey, Audrey Reynolds of Berkley, Anita Jacobs of Connecticut and Fannie Ashley of Berkley; a sister, Jean Harmon of Berkley; and a brother David Ashley of Vermont.
