Family researchers originally believed her middle name was Mary. However, the Delayed Tennessee Birth Certificate of three of her daughters proved her middle name to be Emma.

She was named after both of her grandmothers. Her paternal grandmother was Rachel Clouse Willis Harris. Her maternal grandmother was Alcey {pronounced Elsie} Emily Brown Jarvis.
