The DOB is somewhat uncertain - it is listed in the obituary as Sept. 15, 1837 but in cemetery listings as Sept. 15, 1838 (possibly read from headstone inscription ??). Will use the 1838 DOB year for this memorial but with that caution.

Also, The F/A/G locations for DOB's does not have a "White" county in Kentucky. It may have merged with another county since the 1830's, so will just use Kentucky for the birth location state on this memorial.

"Batavia News", October 5, 1916

Martha J. ESTES, born White Co., Ky., Sept. 15, 1837, died Packwood Sept. 26, 1916. When 12, came with her parents to Keokuk Co., Iowa, and settled near Ioka. Here she met James GILL and they were married in the '50s. She was left with a six weeks old babe and another 18 months old babe in 1862 when her husband felt it his duty to enlist to help save the union.... Member Baptist Church at Rock Creek when young but after coming to this county in 1876 identified with M.E. Church. Husband died ten years ago.... Surviving sons: James in Missouri; Mitchell of Denver, Col. (sic. George Mitchell Gill), and Wallace of Packwood (sic. Wallace W. Gill).... Interment Packwood Cemetery. (Death Record shows her parents were Washington ESTES, born Ky. & Corrilla CRANE.)
