MATTOON — Theren Dwight Swinford Sr., 87, of Mattoon, passed away at 12:14 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013.
Graveside Services with Military Rites for family and friends honoring his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday April 15, 2013 at Zion Hill Cemetery, south of Lake Paradise. Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Theren was born on January 27, 1926 in Mattoon, IL the son of Charles W. and Fern (Waters) Swinford. He married Betty K. Farrier on July 20, 1947.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Betty K. Swinford of Mattoon; son, Theren D. "Herc" Jr. (Peggy) Swinford of Mattoon, IL; daughter, Thaila (Jay) Hale of Windsor, IL; grandsons, Theren D. "TD" Swinford III of Haggerstown, MD, Jay C. "JC" Hale of Windsor, IL; step granddaughter, Erika Arthur of Findlay, IL; brother, Charles (Marilyn) Swinford of Phoenix, AZ; and three grand dogs, Daisy Mae, Maui, and Pete. Theren was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters, and step granddaughter, Greta Arthur.
Theren was the owner and operator Swinford and Son Construction in Mattoon. He served honorably in the South Pacific for the United States Navy. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #4325, Eagles and the Masons. Theren was also a former member of the American Legion and the Elks. He was an avid golfer, bowler and enjoyed dancing. Most of all he loved life and enjoyed spending time with his family.
