Duke spent a number of years in California during the 1930's and the 1940's. During World War II, he worked as a welding foreman at the Kaiser Shipyard at Richmond, California. Soon after the war he returned to his farm in Cedar County.
On December 24, 1953, Duke was married to Fern Elizabeth Hornbeck, the daughter of Lon and Martha (Routh) Hornbeck. Duke and Fern lived in later years in semi-retirement enjoying their home on Bear Creek, while spending their leisure time fishing in the creek. or in some of the nearby lakes.
