Margaret Luvinia Summers was born in Lewis County, Virginia (at a location near Slab Creek in present day Ritchie County, West Virginia). Her father and mother had only recently settled in the area. She grew up on a farm with her future husband as her neighbor; for the Summers and Cox families appear on the 1860 United States Census, separated only by the Conway family farm. Following her marriage to John Marshall Cox on June 30, 1864, she occupied herself with the difficult rural West Virginian tasks of housekeeping, farmwork, and later, raising children. At the time of her marriage, John Marshall Cox was a Union Soldier in the 6th West Virginia Cavalry. He saw action at the Second Battle of Bull Run, among others. After a good life of 64 years, Margaret died on August 8, 1906 from heart failure, and was thereafter buried alongside her husband, who predeceased her by only a few weeks, at the Harrisville I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Harrisville, Ritchie County, West Virginia.
