40 Squadron's Vickers Wellington 1c (#R1438) aircraft, with an aircrew of six, took off at night from RAF Alconbury for an air operation over Dusseldorf, Germany. On the return flight, following the operation, R1438's engines stalled, resulting in its crashing near the Alconbury aerodrome and taking the lives of five members of the crew.

The airmen who perished in the accident were-

RAFVR Sergeant Raymond William BODY,

RCAF Sergeant Leonard David DOUGHERTY,

RCAF Sergeant Allan Fenwick HICKS and
