156 Squadron's Vickers Wellington (#BK203) aircraft, with an aircrew of five, was returning to base following an air operation flight over Aachen, Germany. Severe icing caused a loss of control of the aircraft, so the pilot, Pilot Officer Chiddick, ordered his crew mates to bale out near Halstead, Essex. BK203 crashed near Gestingthorpe, taking the life of Pilot Officer Chiddick.
