40 Squadron's Vickers Wellington 1c (#R1438) aircraft, with an aircrew of six, took off at night from RAF Alconbury for an air operation over Dusseldorf, Germany. On the return flight, following the operation, R1438's engines stalled, resulting in its crashing near the Alconbury aerodrome and taking the lives of five members of the crew.

Sergeant Allan Fenwick Hicks is commemorated on Page 32 of Canada'a Second World War Book of Remembrance.

He is also commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
