Constance Edna Brown Benton, age 79, passed away at home after a long and courageous battle with bronchiectasis, a chronic lung condition, early Wednesday morning, April 10, 2013.

She was born and lived her entire life in New Orleans, a city she very much loved.

She was the cherished only child born to the late Cora Yost Bush Brown and Frank James Brown on August 22, 1933. She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Stephen Gay Benton, and their children Stephen Gay Benton, Jr., Frank James Brown Benton, Bush Gresham Benton (Charlotte Arnemann) and Lisette Katherine Benton Overby (John Overby).

She was known as "Honey" to her five grandchildren whom she adored: Stephen Gay Benton III, her namesake Constance Gresham Brooke Overby, John Carl Overby Jr., Katherine Coll Benton and William Bush Benton.

Connie is also survived by her first cousin, Yvonne Brown Collier. Connie and Yvonne considered each other more like sisters than cousins. Connie also had a large group of lifelong friends whom she too loved as they loved her. She was so easy to love – so gentle, kind, patient and loyal.

She had a deep relationship with the Lord, enjoyed politics, and loved animals.

She would keep food in her car to feed hungry animals and was an avid campaigner for animal rights.

Connie attended Isidore Newman School but left in her senior year to attend St. Martin's Episcopal School. She was in the first graduating class of St. Martin's in 1951 but maintained enduring relationships with classmates from both schools. Four years later, in 1955, she graduated from Newcomb College where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was also a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America and the Junior League of New Orleans.

We would like to thank Connie's doctors, Dr. Charlie Smith, III and Dr. Lauren Richey and their staff, and Connie's wonderful caregivers namely Kim Adams-Hall, Diana Smith, and Cheryl Harris.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 2216 Metairie Rd, Metairie, LA 70001 on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11am. A visitation will be held from 9:30am until service time.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
