Paul Weyman Byers, 61, of Conway, former vice president for academic affairs at Central Baptist College, died unexpectedly at his home at Conway, Sunday evening, Jan. 17. He had been in ill health for several years. He had coronary bypass surgery July 15, 1980.
Prior to his retirement in 1985, Byers served 31 years a CBC as instructor, department head and academic dean. He was named vice president emeritus in recognition of his years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
A native of Nashville, Arkansas. He was the son of Paul G. and Nora Jo Copeland Byers. He was saved at the age of 16 and surrendered to preach in June, 1954 at the age of 27. He was ordained the following February by the Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church in Magnolia.
Byers received his B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Texas and a M.S.E. degree from the University of Central Arkansas.
He pastored the following churches,Macedonia Church at Greenbrier, Calvary at Conway, Calvary at Heber Springs, New Home at Quitman and Mt. Pleasant at Plumerville. At his death he was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church of Conway.
Byers is survived by his wife, Nadine Lester Byers of Conway; three sons, Stephen Paul Byers of Conway, Robert Douglas Byers of Baton Rouge, LA. and David Judson Byers of Enola; a daughter, Lauretta Susan Byers of Little Rock; his mother, Nora Jo Byers of Magnolia; a brother, Carl Reeder Byers of Houston, TX.; two sisters, Pat Neill and Betty Jo Byers, both of Magnolia.
Funeral services were held Wed., Jan. 13, at Antioch Baptist Church in Conway by CBC President James Ray Raines, Dr. Harold Cooper and Dr. Joel Slayton. Burial was in Crestlawn Memorial Park at Conway.
