Early Movers and Shakers of Cawker City:
Granville Lee Hudkins

February 8, 1923
Cawker City Ledger
Ledger’s Founder is Dead
G. L. Hudkins died at Long
Beach, Calif. on Tuesday morn-
ing, Feb. 6th, and his remains will
be brought to Salina, Monday ev-
ening, Feb. 12th, where funeral
services will be held the next day.
Mr. Hudkins was at one time a
leading citizen of this community,
and although neither a newspaper
man nor printer founded the Caw-
ker City Ledger in 1899, and for
many years was cashier of the
Commercial State Bank, which in-
situation he was instrumental in
organizing. In 1907 he went into
the automobile business, and built
what is now known as the Pioneer
Garage, owned by Chas. Hotle.
At that time it was the largest
building in the state devoted ex-
clusively to the auto business and
attracted great attention. Some
time later he became the distribu-
tor for Fords in northwestern Kan-
sas, and in order to handle this
big business he closed out his in-
terests here and moved to Salina,
where he was very successful, re-
tiring from the auto business two
years ago, since which time he ac-
quired substantial oil and other
interests in California, we under-
stand. He leaves a wife and four
children.

Not mentioned in the obituary is that he started life as a teacher. He served as postmaster in Cawker City in 1894 and was instrumental in getting the Cawker City power plant built.
