"Mrs. Gertrude Achter, 94, of Wahpeton died Wednesday, 8 September at Saint Francis Hospital in Breckenridge. The funeral will be at 10:30 Friday at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Wahpeton, Rev. George Mehok officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
"Gertrude Hermes was born 9 December 1887 in Summit Township near Great Bend to Carl and Catherine (Mohr) Hermes. She was raised and attended schools in Summit Township including Saint Joseph's School which at one time operated near Great Bend.
On 7 June 1904, Gertrude married Henry Achter at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Wahpeton. They farmed a few years and moved to Wahpeton in 1908.
"Her husband worked for the Ottertail Power Company. He died in 1943. She continued to live at Wahpeton and had worked as a pastry cook at N.D. State School of Science. She had also been a cook at Saint John's Catholic School in Wahpeton.
"She was a member of the Saint John the Evangelist Church, Christian Mothers, Lady Foresters and had served as president of the St. John's Ladies Aid.
"Survivors include a son Elmer, Northridge, Calif., two sisters, Josephine Hermes and Mrs. Joseph (Tracy) Freemark, both of Wahpeton; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren."
