Hazel Carolyn Newport of Lincoln City, formerly of Springfield, died March 17 of age-related causes. She was 91.

She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Midland, Texas, to Charles and Minnie Love Richardson. She married Lawrence Newport in 1933 in Roseburg. He died in 1984.

A high school graduate, she worked as a school bus driver and operated a coin laundry in Roseburg in the 1950s. She was employed by J.C. Penney in Corvallis, later transferring to the Valley River Center store. She retired from there in the early 1980s. She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard and assisting her older friends and neighbors with transportation to shopping and other appointments.

Survivors include her son, Don, of Livingston, Texas; two daughters, Nonda DuRette of Otis and Carole Lantz of Rockaway; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Kim Newport, died in 1960.
