Miss Laura Cornwell of 116 Grover St., died at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday (January 11, 1977) at her home. Miss Cornwell was a teacher and principal at Marion School for 20 years. She had earlier taught in the Cleveland County School System. After her retirement from local schools, she went to Honolulu, Hawaii, with the Baptist Academy where she served as principal of the elementary school for eight years. While in Hawaii, she was active in mission work and in the community church where she taught Sunday School. When she returned to Shelby, she continued her interest in the mission work of Hawaii.
A Cleveland County native, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Susan Elliott Cornwell. She attended the University of North Carolina and Duke University.

Surviving are one brother, Frank Cornwell of Shelby and two sisters, Mrs. Nora C. Harris of Shelby and Mrs. E. S. Elliott of Clarksville, Ind.

Services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church, where she was a member and Sunday School teacher. The Rev. Gene Watterson and the Rev. William H. Pope will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Mortuary.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Shelby or the Baptist Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii.
