The son of Sebastian S. & Mary Magdalena Eunice (Long) Charles, he married Mary Leiter June 10, 1860, and fathered William Edmund (b. 09/21/61), Susan Elizabeth (b. 06/16/63, d. 08/20/65), Mary Ellen (b. 03/05/65 - married Elmer Reiber), George Cary (b. 07/22/67), Simon Sebastian (b. 02/11/70), Sarah Catherine (b. 01/06/72 - married John Foster), Cora Alice (b. 10/18/74 - married George Kough), and Christina S. & John Austin (b. 05/03/77 - Christina married George C. Charles). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Liverpool Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Perry County October 21, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 4 as a private with Co. E, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 17, 1863.

He died at age 67-4-24.
