IN A STRANGE WAY.
Hobart Allen Falls From Hay Rake—Is Dragged, Kicked by Horses and Dies Shortly.
An inexpressibly sad and unexplainable accident occurred on the farm of George M. Meeder in Orangeville last Thursday morning as the result of which Hobart Allen, the eleven-year-old son of K. Allen lost his life. The lad, whose father is the cheese maker in the factory near Mr. Meeder's, was driving two horses on a hay rake, in the same field in which Mr. Meeder and his son were at work, but the men were not in sight of the boy with the rake and the first thing which attracted attention, was the team going across the field toward the road. Mr. Meeder's son saw them, and after calling to the horses to stop, and he was following them to the barn, some half mile distant, when Miss Nellie Meeder heard his calling and went out and stopped the team. It was then discovered that Hobart Allen had in some way fallen between the two horses and that the inside tug of the near horse was around his body, and though the boy was still living, the kicks received on the back of his head had fractured the skull, and he lived but a short time. The horses were dragging the whiffletrees and the evener, and the tugs were fastened and how the boy got in the position described is past understanding. The rake with the pole broken was in the field. The body was taken to Mr. Meeder's house, and on Saturday was taken to Almond, Allegany County for burial. The boy's mother died a couple of years ago. The father, two brothers and a sister survive. This is Mr. Allen's second season at the factory.
