Mary was the third wife of Samuel Arthur Bacon (Nashville, Arkansas), son of Jesse James Bacon and Rebecca Elizabeth Reese. Mary and Samuel were the parents of the following children:

Rebecca Jane

MARY OLA (SMITHSON) BACON, age 93, died Monday, March 13, 2000 at Bryant Nursing Center in Edmond, Oklahoma, near the home of her daughter, Jane Verrett. She was born on October 21, 1906 in Wingate, Texas to John Thomas and Lula Dove (Humphreys) Smithson. She enrolled in National Business College in Abilene in1925. After graduation, Mary Ola started working as a secretary and stenographer at the Abilene Candy Company, which specialized in Stemwinders, Jo-Boys and other candies.

On October 29, 1941, she married Samuel (Sam) Arthur Bacon, the owner of the candy company. In 1945, they sold the candy company and moved to their Tuscola ranch, where they lived for five years before returning to Abilene. Samuel worked in ranching and land development until his death on November 20, 1963.

They were both members of University Church of Christ and Mr. Bacon was on the Board of Trustees of Abilene Christian College for many years. Mrs. Bacon was an accomplished seamstress and gardener. She enjoyed her involvement at University Church of Christ in making quilts for the needy. In 1987, Mary Ola moved away from Abilene to live with her daughter, Judy Walker and her family. They lived in various locations including Lorenzo, Texas.

Survivors include three children, Jane Verett of Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Donald David Bacon of New Braunfels and Judy Walker of Lorenzo, Texas; two sisters, Cora Newhouse of Jacksonville, Illinois and Edna Mae Whitefield of Odessa, Texas; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Elliot-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory in Abilene. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. (Sent by John V. Smithson of London, UK)
