Kershaw - May 6, John Massey, 44, of Taxahaw, who had been a patient at the Veterans' hospital at Oteen, NC, near Asheville for the past several months died at that institution Monday morning, April 27. The body was brought to Kershaw and from there it was removed to the home of Mrs. C.C. Knight, Taxahaw, sister of Mr. Massey. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Dr. Barnwell Caston and the Rev. Wade Funderburk and interment was in the cemetery at Taxahaw.
Mr. Massey son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Massey of Taxahaw was born at Taxahaw, where he spent most of his life engaged in farming. He attended the Taxahaw school and Bailey Military institute, Greenwood. He was a veteran of the World War, having enlisted in Company M of the 118th infantry of the 13th division at the outbreak of the war. He served as a corporal overseas with the division the entire time the division was over there and was discharged a corporal when the division returned home.
Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Jeanette Croxton, and one little daughter, Joan; two brothers, James and Jack Massey of Taxahaw and four sisters, Mrs. C.C. Knight and Mrs. J.C. Cook of Taxahaw. Mrs. Drew Byrd of Charlotte and Mrs. Walter Robinson of Monroe, NC.
