James Edward Champion, 81, of Gaffney, SC, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at his residence.

A native of Cherokee County, he was the widower of Betty (Ruppe) Champion and a son of the late John Henderson Champion and Hattie (Self) Champion.

A retired carpenter at Cone Mill in Cliffside, NC, where he operated The Wood Shop, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and participated in three major battles including The Battle of the Bulge, and was a member of Stateline Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Melvin Champion of Mayo, SC; daughter, Ellen C. Hayes of Chesnee, SC; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Edith Wyatt of Chesnee, SC and Lois Champion of Gaffney.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Champion.

Visitation was held 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home.

Funeral services followed at 11:00 a.m. the Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by Rev. Eddie Bolin and Rev. Alan Hood. Interment followed in Springhill Memorial Gardens, Chesnee, SC.

Pallbearers were John Hayes, Jr., Cameron Phillips, Chris Scruggs, David Mathis, Joe Mathis, and Michael Mathis.
