Mattie graduated from Woodlawn High School and earned her Associate Degree from Jefferson State Junior College. Other than being a wonderful mother, she worked in the cafeteria of South East Lake Elementary School and then as the manager of McElwain Elementary School to complete her career in the Birmingham City School District.
Mattie was the loving mother of seven children of her own and surrogate mother to thousands of children in the Birmingham area. She was an animal lover and owner of a rooster named Fred, two hens, Badillia and Mini HaHa, two goats, Salt and Pepper, a dog name Chester and many other lucky pets.
She was an active member in Lakewood Baptist Church as a child, St. Barnabas Catholic Church as an adult when she married, and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church as a senior citizen. She was involved with many organizations such as the Roebuck Elks Women's Auxiliary and a Member of the National Education Association.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband Edward H Hornbuckle, Sr, her father Milton Graves Ellyson, mother Opal I Ellyson Jacks, brothers Hulsey Milton Ellyson and Fred Ellyson, and sister Sara Dell Rachielles
She was survived by her brother Donald Graves Ellyson of South Carolina, her daughters Mary Lou Douglas, Ada McBride, Linda Smith, Stephanie Hornbuckle, Martha Lewis, and her sons Edward H Hornbuckle, Jr and Daniel E Hornbuckle. She was the grandmother to 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her kindness and giving personality lives on through all those she loved.
