BLOOMINGTON - Services celebrating the life of Gerald E. Williams, 82, of 16 Szarek Drive, Bloomington, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1920 E. Oakland Ave., Bloomington. Father Howard Bowlin will officiate.

Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington. Luncheon will be held at the church following the committal service. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with Masonic services at 10 a.m. East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

He died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday (June 10, 2003) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthew's or a charity of the donors choice.

Mr. Williams was born Oct. 13, 1920, at Brokaw Hospital, Normal, the son of Charles and Sarah E. Williams. He married Mary E. Hoover on April 28, 1944, at St. Matthew's Church. They celebrated their 59th anniversary in April this year.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Rebecca (Ronald) Karger, Chattanooga, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Christopher A. Karger, Fargo, N.D.; Kimberley M. Karger, Lakeland, Fla.; and Meredith J. Karger, Chattanooga; a great-grandson, Daniel A., Fargo; a brother, Robert S. (Pat) Williams, Bloomington; and three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and many dear nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mr. Williams in death were his parents, and two sons, Daniel in 1991 and Jeffrey in 1965.

He was a lifetime member of St. Matthew's; a life member, post Adjutant and Commander of American Legion Post #56; a 50-year member of the Bloomington Consistory and the Wade Barney Masonic Lodge; a member of Machinists Lodge 1000 and the Senior Club.

He retired from Paul F. Beich Candy Company as a machinist in 1982 following an on-the-job accident. Previously he was a Watchmaker for Sigmund Sorg Jewelry Store, W. Washington St. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School in 1939, and the School of Horology in Peoria in 1945.

He enlisted in the 32rd Infantry (Red Arrow) Division of the United States Army in June 1942 and received a medical discharge in April 1944 after serving in the Panama Canal, Australia and the South Pacific.

He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, friend and neighbor. He loved ballroom dancing and was an avid dancer before his accident. He was a lifetime Cub fan.

May he rest in peace. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
