Isaac Scudder was the 6th of seven children born to colonial era patriot Benjamin Scudder and his first wife, the former Sarah Cory. The year of his 6th birthday, 1776, brought both the death of his mother and the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, during which his father fought for American independence. Isaac was in his early teens when the war drew to a close, and in his early twenties when he married the former Elizabeth Tucker. The couple eventually had nine children, including six sons and two daughters born between the years 1795-1817, but only six lived to maturity. Described in his epitaph as "A husband and father dear", Isaac died "in his 60th year". His survivors included his wife; their sons Benjamin, Isaac, and John; and daughters Sarah and Mary (Mrs. James Cole). Neither his widow nor his namesake saw the end of the decade: Elizabeth lived only three more years, and the younger Isaac Scudder, who bore the same name as an infant brother who'd died in 1802, died at age 28 in 1837. Buried here with Isaac Sr., the Scudder gravestones appear to be the unsigned work of noted carver J.C. Mooney of Connecticut Farms, (present day Union, NJ). GRAVESTONE PHOTO: Nikita Barlow
