He served in the Government Quartermaster's dept in 1847. On Feb. 2, 1850, he married Eliza Jane Elliott, the daughter of Willis Willard and Mary Polly (Vanderpool) Elliott. Thomas and Eliza Jane had seven children.
In 1858 he left Missouri with his family and headed to California. Their wagon train was attacked by Mohave Indians on the banks of the Colorado River. He and his family returned to Missouri.
Thomas was a Methodist circuit rider affiliated with the M.E. Church South.
