Dr. James Goodman, 68, prominent Pike County doctor, died at his home in Pleasant Hill at midnight Sunday. His death was caused by organic heart trouble of which he had been afflicted for several years. He and Mrs. Goodman had spent the evening with a neighbor and he was stricken soon after they returned home and died instantly.
James Eugene Goodman, son of James Augustus and Clarissa Goodman, was born at Dover, Mo., December 15, 1884. He spent the early years of his life on the farm. He attended Barnes Medical College in St. Louis and graduated in 1911. He practiced in Louisiana, Mo., for a year and came to Pleasant Hill in 1912, where he and Dr. Russell P. Wells formed a partnership. The partnership of Drs. Wells and Goodman continued for many years. When the partnership was dissolved Dr. Goodman opened his own office and continued to practice his profession until his death. Dr. Goodman was married to Miss Virginia Ogden at Dover, Mo., June 10, 1914, and their entire married life has been spent in Pleasant Hill. Dr. Goodman was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and Quincy Consistory. He was on the staff of the Illini Hospital in Pittsfield. Dr. Goodman served as a Lt. in the medical corps of the United States Army during World War I. Dr. Goodman had followed the medical profession in this community for 38 years. When he first came to Pleasant Hill he traveled muddy and frozen roads on horseback, by buggy and two wheeled cart to treat the sick. No night was too cold or too bad, no roads too muddy to hinder him in the duty of his chosen profession. He answered all calls night or day. Dr. Goodman's patients at the time of his death included three generations in many families of this community. His kind and sympathetic counsel and advice will long be remembered by his numerous friends and patients. He had always taken a prominent part in the civic activities of Pleasant Hill and community. Surviving are his widow, three children, Dr. Lawrence O. Goodman of Marshalltown, Ia.; Dr. James E. Goodman of the U. S. Navy, stationed at Pensacola, Fla., and Mrs. Kathryn Niebur of Pittsfield, six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Charles Wirick of Long Beach, California and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill at 2 Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Joe Maynard of Pittsfield in charge. Burial was in Crescent Heights Cemetery.
