Samuel Young McCalla, son of Robert M. McCalla and the former Nancy Jane Gragg, was born the 3rd of December 1824 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. His parents emigrate to the area around Lincoln County, Tennessee around 1830, as part of a group of Reform Presbyterians; who founded Prsoperity A.R.P. Church.

On August 18th 1846, Samuel married Katherine Margaret Parkinson; with whom he had the following known children:
Brown Marcus (1847-1927)
Robert Young (1849-1940)
Hugh Silas (1851-1922)
Martha Parkinson (1856-1935)
John Calvin (1860-1936)
M. Lillie (1862-)

After Catherine's death in 1862, Samuel married Martha Jane Moore (Mrs. Wm. A. Sloan) on May 31st 1864; they had the following known children:
William Hill (1865-1933)
Alfred Knox (1867-1931)
Archie Sloan (1868-1938)
Frances Elizabeth (1871-1938)
Mary Lillie (1873-)
