Obituary:

Lillian M. Dunlap, 77, of Caro, died July 1 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility following a lingering illness.

She was born Jan. 31, 1916, on the family farm near Shabbona.

Dunlap graduated from Cass City High School in 1934. The following year she attended a freshman college sponsored by the University of Michigan. She won a scholarship, attending U of M then transferring to Eastern Michigan University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939. Her master's degree was earned at U of M in 1950 and her EDS was earned at Michigan State University in 1964. Dunlap also attended summer school at Denver University in 1945.

In the fall of 1939, she began teaching sixth grade in the Owosso School system. In 1945 she became the visiting teacher for Sanilac County, where she supervised 125 rural schools.

Dunlap made her home in Shabbona from 1945 until she moved to Caro in 1960. She did, however, come to Caro in 1949 as a fourth grade teacher and then became principal of McComb School. She retired in 1978.

Dunlap's commitment to young people and education was not confined to school. Through her church she served as director of Christian education for the Caro congregation of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and for the Eastern Michigan District of the church. In March of 1986 she was ordained an elder in the church and in October of 1987 was ordained to the office of high priest evangelist-patriarch.

In addition to school and church activities, Dunlap was active in community affairs. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Caro; served on the Foster Care Review Board Pilot Project; served on the Board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; she was a member of the National Education Association, the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association, holding various offices, including being president of the latter. She was active in the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and in September of 1991 began her term as president which she had to resign due to her illness.

In 1968, she was named "Who's Who in American Women of 1968-69." At the time of her retirement, she was presented by the Michigan Legislature a salute in recognition of a career devoted to the higher principles of education and public service through Concurrent Resolution No. 803.

Dunlap is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Ilene and Ronald Warren of Caro, and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, John and William Dunlap, and 2 sisters, May Evo and Mary Kritzman, all predeceased her.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Caro Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Pastor Darlene Kuenzli and Elder Don Richards of Cass City officiating, assisted by Jerry Bernhardt and Ronald Kuenzli.

Burial was in the Evergreen Township Cemetery near Shabbona.

Those considering a memorial contribution are asked to consider the Temple Endowment Fund, RIDS or to the donor's favorite charity.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Huston & Ransford Funeral Home in Caro.
