Albert is a descendent of a very interesting family of Colonels, Generals, Governors and the first Indian Chief of the Indian Territories. This family fought in almost every war America has been involved in.
The first Pickens to arrive in America was William Henry Pickens in 1719 who settled in Pennsylvania. He had seven sons & three daughters. William's descendents moved west and settled for quite some time in Hardin Co. TN. It appears that Albert's grandfather, John William Gabriel Pickens, brought his family to the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory around 1885 joining the rest of the Pickens clan. JWG's son, George W. married Annetta McCann about 1890. Eight children were born to this union. Albert, the 5th child, was born in 1902 in Pickens CO. Indian Territory. (now Garvin Co.) The 1910 census finds the family in Comanche Co. OK. and 1920 census shows they are in McCain Co. OK. Albert met and married Virgie Lee Simmons from Lindsay, Garvin Co. OK. on 22 Dec. 1923. Three children were born to this union.
Farming was Albert's occupation in Oklahoma but bank failures and the Dust Bowl prompted him to leave in 1934. The family spent about five years in Texas before moving to Arizona in 1939. A friend convinced Albert to come to Solomon, AZ. While living in Solomon, Albert operated a gas station with rental cabins.
A few years later, Albert and family moved to Safford. Albert went to work for the City of Safford as a mechanic and worked for the city until his retirement. The rest of Albert's life was spent in Safford surrounded by his 3 children and their families.
