Elizabeth Miriam Jensen Clayton Miriam Clayton, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2013, at the age of 94. Miriam was born on Dec. 30, 1918, in Salt Lake City to Elizabeth Keddington Jensen and Andrew Edward Jensen, the fourth of five children. She spent her early years in Salt Lake City. Many summers she and her brother Joseph would travel with their father when he went on business throughout Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. It was on these trips that she learned to loved the beauties of nature. Learning to appreciate the beauty of places such as Zion's and Yellowstone National Parks was an education well worth the rough ride on dirt roads. She often reminded her children to look for something of beauty each day. Miriam graduated from East High School and then Henager Business College. She enjoyed the years she spent in the business world. On a vacation to Southern California she loved it so much she stayed. She accepted a position with the Los Angeles City and County in a ten-story building with a wonderful view of downtown. All was well until an earthquake shook the building. Undaunted, she stayed on until war broke out. During WWII she had an offer to work for Western Airlines because the government was setting up a school at the Salt Lake Airport to teach young lieutenants to fly the huge cargo planes being used. Following WWII she returned to Los Angeles taking a secretarial position with the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education where she worked until she retired. She married Raymond B. Clayton in San Antonio, Texas, during the war. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died in Pasadena, CA, in 1981. One of the highlights in her retirement years was traveling. Miriam and her dear friend Beth Eccles traveled together each summer for several years. Some of their favorite destinations included New Zealand, the British Isles, and Canada. During her life Miriam participated in many organizations. She belonged to the Christian Professional Women's Organization, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and served as a docent at the Gamble House in Pasadena designed by the architects Greene and Greene. After retiring, she returned to Utah to be closer to family. Her talents included a nice soprano singing voice, crocheting afghans, painting ceramics, and writing poetry. She loved to read books and was always very well informed on political affairs. An active member of the LDS Church, she served in the Jr. Sunday School, in the Relief Society presidency, and as Young Women's President. She especially enjoyed teaching relief Society lessons for a number of years in Garvanza Ward and Glendale Ward in California. She is survived by her children: Marilyn (Richard) Boulter of Heber City, Utah; Carole (Stephen) Abad of LaVerne, CA; Janet (Guy) Wankier of Salt Lake City, Utah; five grandchildren: Anne, Amy, Alison, Gina, Jeremy; and three great-grandchildren: Justin, Jasen, Ava. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond B. Clayton; brothers: Alva, Eugene, and Joseph; and sister, Marcella Bulloch. Friends are invited to pay their respects at a viewing April 1, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home, 288 North Main Street, Heber City. Private family services will be held with interment in the Heber City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinhoopes.com
