Interesting story in "A Look Back" from the Salina Journal - Apr.17, 1889: Death crossed the threshold of a happy home at 9:05 last night and ruthlessly laid his cold hands on Col. Smith Palmer, chilling the blood in his veins and the world is sadder grown. Through weary months he suffered intense agony and succumbed only when compelled to do so. A good man, a good citizen, a Christian gentleman, he won a warm place in the affections of the people of Salina.

April 19, 1889: The funeral for Col. S.M. Palmer held yesterday was probably the largest that ever took place in Salina. At 1 o'clock the business of the city was hushed and places of business were shut, while flags were displayed at half staff. All the early trains had been bringing in Knights Templars and Blue Lodge Masons so that hundreds had arrived to pay their last respects to a beloved brother. There never was more respect shown to the memory of a departed citizen than was shown Col. Palmer yesterday by the citizens of Salina.
