Amanda Elizabeth Cooper was born in Coopersburg, which was founded by her great-uncle Peter Cooper on land originally owned by her great-grandfather Daniel Cooper. Her father was a businessman and local official. Amanda attended a boarding school, and her granddaughter remembered her as "an aristocratic woman."

Amanda married Edwin Henry Burkhalter in 1867. They had three sons, and moved to Montgomery County, Missouri in 1875. Amanda's husband was several times mayor of Wellsville, where Amanda spent the final decades of her life.
