He was born December 14, 1917, in Cat Springs, Texas, to Thomas George and Mary Alice White Hawkes. Raised in Victoria, Texas, with four brothers and two sisters, he moved to Longview, Texas, in the late 1960s. He married Alice Gathright in 1939, who preceded him in death in 1981. The second love of his life was Winnie, whom he married in 1982.?

He is survived by his wife, Winnie Hawkes; son, Darrell Hawkes and wife, Peggy, of? Paris, Texas; son, Mike Hawkes and wife, Janie; and his daughter, Linda Hawkes Fitzhugh and husband, Michael, all of Longview, Texas. Grandchildren include D.T. Hawkes Jr. and Stacie Hawkes Johnson, both of Paris, Texas; Brian Hawkes of Longview, Texas;Alicia Hawkes Sharp of Argyle, Texas; Ryan Fitzhugh of Grapevine, Texas; and Blair Fitzhugh of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Judy Carpenter and husband, Gene, of Oklahoma City; Dennis Lane of Kansas City; Rick Lane and wife, Emily, of? He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Hawkes of Dayton, Texas.?

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Karen Leigh Hawkes; sisters, Aladine and Gerrie; and brothers, Hallmark, Keith and Bennett Hawkes.

He graduated from Patti Welder High School in Victoria, Texas, and briefly attended Victoria Junior College. His career began in the late 1930s with the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a track man.?He advanced and was elected to be general chairman of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, a position he held for many years, retiring in 1983.?

A lifelong sports fan, he played semi-professional baseball sponsored by Texas Power & Light Co. in his youth. One of his greatest joys was fishing expeditions with his sons, Darrell and Mike, on the Texas coast, in South Texas rivers or in Darrell's ponds. Few were better at reading opponents' hands in a game of 42. Gifted mechanically, he enjoyed being able to "fix" things that had often been discarded.?

He was devoted to his church, Greggton First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. His quick wit and sense of humor was his trademark.?Although he saw the sights of London, Paris, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico, he led a wonderfully simple life by choice, and he would often tell his family how the Lord had blessed him.?

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, July 26, 2009, with services at 10 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, all at Lakeview Funeral Home.?
