Silas Coons married Mahala Kelly on Dec. 25, 1828 at Johnson County. She was the daughter of Mathew Kelly.
Silas bought 40 acres of land in Johnson County from his mother in October 1830. Silas and wife Mahala, now of adjoining Shelby County, sold this land in 1831.
Silas and Mahala had three children. Mahala died before 1838, when Silas married his first cousin Elizabeth Runkle. This couple had eight children.
Silas brought his family to Davis County, Iowa in 1851. He appears in the 1860 and 1870 census in Davis County, and in McPherson County, Kansas in the 1880 census. He died on Aug. 9, 1881 in McPherson County.
