Joe Nettleton, 86, of Melba, Owyhee County, died Friday, Apr. 7, 1995, at his home. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Apr. 10, at Persons-Flahiff Funeral Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Apr. 11, at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Alfred Puccinelli, S.M., officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Nampa.
Joe was born Aug. 30, 1908, on Sinker Creek in Owyhee County, Idaho, a son of Villo and Margaret Joyce Nettleton. He was raised on Sinker Creek where his family ranched and he attended school for a time at Silver City, then later in Boise and in Portland, Ore. He attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., graduating in 1929. He married Edith Langford April 10, 1939, in Wendell and they ranched on the home place at Sinker Creek with his brother, Hubert, from 1939-1943. Joe and Edith moved to Reynolds Creek in 1943 where they raised their family and ranched until his retirement in 1987. They moved from Reynolds Creek to their farm on the Snake River near Murphy and resided there until his death. Joe Nettleton was an Honorary Lifetime member of the Owyhee Cattlemen's Association and served as a public official in the position of Owyhee County Clerk; served on the Idaho State Tax Com-mission from 1945-1957 and was appointed to the Idaho Water Resources Board serving for four years. He is a past president of the Idaho Cattlemen's Association. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Melba.
Joe loved his life as a cattle rancher and, together with Edith, built their ranch at Reynolds Creek into one of the most successful and notable ranches in Owyhee County. Joe loved the beautiful Owyhee County he grew up in and also the cattle and horses which he raised. He loved to tell stories about the horses he had ridden and their different personalities and (sometimes) ornery dispositions.
Joe loved the people who were around him and those friends and relatives who were always stopping and staying at the ranch always felt the warm welcome and hospitality in Joe and Edith's home. He will truly be missed by his family and friends, but they will always be able to visualize and feel his presence in the land he lived and worked and loved, Owyhee County, Idaho.
Survivors include his wife Edith of Melba, two sons and their wives, Stephen J. and Karen Nettleton of Parma and Robert C. and Jan Nettleton of Melba; a sister, Emeline Nettleton of Nampa; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
