Joseph Gagnon, Sr. was the first child of Damase Gagnon (Thomas Gagneau) and Celina Guerin. He was born in Canada and came to the United States in 1902. The family settled in River Rouge, just south of Detroit. In 1911 Joseph was working in the Great Lakes shipyards. By 1920 he was a crane man at Great Lakes Steel. He married Emma Abair. Several of the family members changed the spelling of their surname to "Gagneau" at the insistence of their parish priest, who told them they were spelling their name wrong. Joseph kept the original spelling.

Joseph and Emma were the parents of Marion b. 1908, Agnes b. 1909, Gladys b. 1911, Joseph Jr. b. 1913 who died in 1945 in Henri-Chapelle, Belgium while fighting there, Lillian b. 1916, Edward b. 1917, and Ella b. 1919. All their children are now deceased.

Joseph and Emma, his parents, and most of his siblings are buried at St. Charles Cemetery, Newport, where his brother Adolphus had been a member of the parish and bought numerous cemetery plots. His sister, Mary Perault, is buried on Mackinac Island where she lived year-round with her husband, James.
