Robert "Bob" Hudson Mayo was the son of W. D. Mayo an OK business man for over 65 years who the W. D. Mayo Lock & Dam was named by Congress, and Jessie Wheeler; he had 7 siblings which preceded him in death. He was the great-grandson of William Montgomery Mayo and Jane Anderson who settled and cleared most of the Mayo Farm in 1853, and the grandson of Capt. Richard Dale Mayo and Willie Dale planters on the acreage.

Bob and family moved to AR 1843 where he assumed management of the Mayo Farm located southeast of Holly Grove. He later purchased the acreaged from other family members becoming the 4th generation owner of the Mayo Farm which had been in the family over 150 yrs.

He was the the great-grandson of Nancy Watie who married John F. Wheeler, sister of Confederate Gen. Stan Watie, the last commanding Confederate officer to surrender following the Civil War. Nancy's other brother "Buck" Elias Boudinot was a speaker, translator and jorunalist who became the first Editor of the historic Cherokee Phoenix at New Echota, GA, in 1828.

His maternal great-grandfather John Foster Wheeler, printed the first book in what is today OK and later owned and operated the first daily newspaper west of Little Rock AR beginning in 1840. His maternal grandfather, Will Watie Wheeler, co-founded the town of Sallisaw, OK.

He married Janice Ballowe Deaton (buried at Valley Grove); they had one daughter: Janet May Thompson Hardin of Endid, OK; and 6 sons: Gene Allen and his wife Joyce of Water Valley MS; Dr. John Mooring Mayho of Beaumont, TX; Robert Dale Mayo and wife Joan of Sallisaw, OK; William Richard Mayo of Fayetteville, AR; Walter Pointer Mayo of Springdale, AR; and James Wheeler Mayo and wife Teri of Holly Grove, AR.
