Darwin Aldinger, 70, Spearfish, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at his home in Spearfish.
Darwin was born Jan. 30, 1933, at Bowdle, S.D., to Rudolph and Katherine (Rieger) Aldinger. He grew up in Bowdle and attended grade school there. He worked on various farms in the Bowdle and McLaughlin area. Darwin married Margie Hertel on January 2, 1959, at McLaughlin. In the fall of 1959 they moved to Pierre where Darwin worked on the Oahe Dam then moved to Piedmont where he worked as a logger. In September 1961 he started work for the Homestake Mine in Lead, retiring in 1992. They moved to Spearfish in 1988. He and Margie spent winters in Texas and summers at Akaska, S.D., until his health failed.
Among his survivors are his wife, Margie, Spearfish; two sons, Monty Aldinger and his wife, Dell, of Huntsville, Texas, and Troy Aldinger and his wife, Kathy, Lead; two daughters, Rhea James and her husband, Dan, Vale, and Rita Loeffen and her husband, Mike, Deadwood; four brothers, Delbert Aldinger, Aberdeen, Ed Eheresman, N.C., and Marvin Aldinger, Portland, Ore.,and Verlin Aldinger, Ocean Shores, Wash.; five sisters, Loretta Nies, Mott, N.D., Edna Iffland, Billings, Mont., Alma Robertson, S.C., Helen Cline, Salem, Ore., and Emma Meidling, Spokane, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, Mike, Matt, Dawn, Jason, Sarah, Leslie, Billy, Tiffany, Tanner and Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Rev. Kent Stillson officiating.
Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21 at the Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Black Hills or funding for children's activities.
