Leonard (Len) Jay Brooks passed away Jan. 31, 2009, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston. He was 83.

He was born April 27, 1925, to Robert Brooks and Alta Shingler in Clarkston.

He was a classmate of the Clarkston High School class of 1944. He was drafted into the U.S. Army while he was a junior in high school and served during World War II. He received a Purple Heart.

Len married Marie Niman April 15, 1944.

After returning from the war in 1947 they moved to Peola, where they ranched until 1959, at which time they moved to Clarkston. Len was a deputy sheriff for 15 years and he was a fire commissioner up until the time of his death.

His activities included the Moose Lodge as past governor and trustee. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, was a Peola Pioneer member, a Peola Cemetery trustee, a member of the Cattlemen's Association, was a volunteer fireman, was an Asotin County Youth Fishing Day volunteer, and he and his wife spent many years as foster parents.

Len was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; a brother, Curtice; a grandson, Jay; and a nephew, Norman.
