Born in Union Grove, Delaware, New York, USA. Son of Jacob M Whitney and Nellie Whitney nee Freeman. Husband of Caroline Whitney nee Dann. John and Caroline were married July 23, 1868 in Colchester, New York. Father of Arthur Stewart Whitney, Harvey Dann Whitney, John Howard Whitney, Homer Freeman Whitney, Florence Emeline Whitney, and Clarence Edward Whitney. Grandfather of Howard E Whitney. After Caroline's death, John married Catherine Wilkomm on Oct 10, 1900. Remains were moved from Union Grove Cemetery to Ouleout Valley Cemetery.

The construction of the Pepacton Reservoir in Delaware County, NY began in 1947 and was completed in 1955. Removals from the following cemeteries took place in 1953 and 1954. Arena (old), Arena (new), Cat Hollow, Conklin, Edget, Flynn, J. R. Shaver, K.E. Davis Burying Ground, Shaver, Shavertown, Union Grove, and Weaver Burying Ground.
