Frank was born in McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA, the son of August Friedrich Wilhelm Luhring and Eva Maria Spiess. He married "Lou" Emily Louisa Crawford on August 16, 1901 in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY.

Frank and Lou had 2 children: Karl Ernest Luhring (who legally changed his name back to the original spelling) and Roseva Crawford Loring (Jenness).
