Mrs. Mary J. Dial, daughter of William and Elizabeth H. Ward was born near Franklin, October 26, 1848, and died January 14, 1914 at 4:25 o'clock at Dr. Day's Sanitarium in Jacksonville, after an illness of a week's duration. The deceased was twice married, the first time to James Lamont and the second time to A. W. Dial of Waverly on August 19, 1890. Mr. Dial preceded her in death four years ago. Three children, Lulu, Bessie and David Lamont, also preceded her in deth. She is survived by one son, Alex Lamont of Kansas City, Mo.; two step daughters, Mrs. Frank H. Curtiss of this city and Mrs. L. B. Turner of Jacksonville; and four brothers, L. C. Ward of Fairbury, Neb.; W. F. Ward of Narka, Kan.; John O. Ward of Sana Maria, Cal.; and James H. Ward of Jacksonville.
Mrs. Dial first became a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Providence but after removing to this city she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church, and when she went to Jacksonville she became a member of Brooklyn M. E. church. She was an active worker in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and also took an active part in the work of the various departments of the church. Mrs. Dial was a woman admired by a wide circle of friends.
The remains were brought to this city last Thursday afternoon, and taken to the residence of Frank H. Curtiss where the funeral services were held Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Rev. W. W. Theobald, pastor of the Brooklyn M. E. church at Jacksonville was in charge, assisted by Rev. J. S. Smith, pastor of the local M. E. church. Interment was in East cemetery.
