The two surviving sons, Robert and William, were taken to live with Uncle Nathan L. and Aunt Lavinia Branch Greenfield, in Tennessee, after their parents died. Robert was 16 and William was 10. Later they left their aunt's home and eventually made their way to Texas, working in print shops along the way.
