Helen Morgan Allen was born in 1889, the daughter of Dr. Elijah A. and Margaret Hopper Morgan. (Dr. Morgan was the doctor in Maroa, Illinois.) The family came to Decatur in 1898, when Helen was nine years old, and lived at 511 West Main Street. Her elementary education was at the Wood Street School, later named Mary W. French. She completed her high school education and then attended Millikin University as a special student from 1906 to 1908.
Helen was a member of the First Methodist Church. She married Jay Milton Allen on June 20, 1917. They had two daughters, Margaret (Russell Larsen) and Dorothy (William Burns, George Coutant) and two sons, Edwin and Robert. (Lt. Robert Allen was killed in action in Germany during World War II on Mar. 19, 1945).
While her children were in school, Helen was very active in the PTA helping the school acquire much needed equipment. During World War II she volunteered with the Junior Red Cross of Macon County, overseeing the production of thousands of knitted and sewn articles which were sent to army and navy hospitals. Her unusual ability to plan and execute made her a valuable member of any committee or group.
Helen was an active member of Chapter CX, P.E.O., serving in a number of offices including President in 1942-43. She was a liberal contributor of her time, finances and a gracious hostess who was long remembered by those who knew and loved her.
