Lawrence is the son of William Powell Avera Jr. and Mary Davis of Greene County, MS. He married Carrie Lee Mohler on October 30, 1888. They had 11 children together: Bessie Louise Avera Watts, Genevive Avera, Claude Bertram Avera, Gladys Duke Avera Tucker, Vivian David Avera, Leonard Rivers Avera, Ludwig Grisby Avera, Eugene Bernard Avera, James Powell Avera, Carol Lee Avera Opocensky, and Trent Wellman Avera.
