Richard Clarence Bonsall was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He attended Superior Sign School in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1948. Before retiring, he worked for Nesper Sign Company for 41 years as a painter. He was featured in an article, "Sign of the times: This job's changing", written by Marie O'Connel DeVries, published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Dec.28,1983. The article spoke of Richard's favorite work, that of hand-lettering signs, in gold leaf, the art of which was somewhat disappearing at that time, because of the cost of gold. He was a member of First Congregational Church. He had served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, and was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post 5. Richard died of Lou Gerhig's, in St.Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral services were held at Turner Chapel West, by the Rev.Glenn Bender, of First Congregational
