(Note: The site of the infirmary is now an empty field near American Drive. On Dec. 12, 1957, five residents died when fire destroyed the two-story brick infirmary, according to a report in The Kentucky Standard. Three other residents were rescued. The infirmary was a place for people “who didn’t have anywhere else to go” and were unable to care for themselves. Such facilities were often referred to as the "poor house". The infirmary, which dated back to 1911, was operated by the county.)
