Richard Henry Mallory, a native and fifth generation resident of Troup County, passed away January 7, 2009 at Columbus Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 30, 1930, in LaGrange, son of Arthur E. and Cecile A. Moore Mallory. He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1948 and received his degree in Business in 1952 from The Citadel in Charleston, S. C. where he was a Cadet Officer, member of the Summerall Guards, and Commander of the Salute Firing Squad, which welcomed visiting dignitaries.

He served as Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean War and was Mobile Platoon Leader of four quad 50-caliber machine guns and 4-40 mm cannons for air and ground fire, stationed largely in Occupied Germany.

Mr. Mallory returned to his home town and began his long business and civic career as Vice President of Mallory Realty Company, rising to President and later Chairman of both Mallory Realty Company and Mallory Insurance Agency. He also served as Chairman of the Board and Trust Officer of LaGrange Banking Company (now Commercial Bank and Trust) and as President of the Lafayette Realty Company; Mallory, Inc.; Tasty Foods, Inc.; Mobile Acres, Inc.; Freedom Finance; Main Street Furniture; and Main Street Finance. He was Vice President of Main Street Associates as well as Manager and Secretary/ Treasurer of LaGrange Theatre Building, Inc.

Mr. Mallory served as Vice-President and Director of the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce. He was a Director of the Troup County Cancer Society and President of the Harwell Avenue P. T. A.

He was honored as a Fellow of LaGrange College. He served as Chairman of the LaGrange Heritage Committee and was Chairman of the LaGrange Homecoming Celebration when Cmdr. Render Crayton was released after seven years as a P. O. W. in Vietnam.

Active in Lions Club, Mr. Mallory was a Life Member and 1972-73 President of the LaGrange Lions Club, receiving the Outstanding Leadership Award from the International President for leading the LaGrange Club to Official Number One Club in Georgia out of 337 clubs.

He was District-Governor of Lions 1975-76. He was a Director of the Peach Bowl, Inc. 1975-76; Vice-President of Georgia Lions Lighthouse in Macon in 1974-76; and Director of the Lions Eye Bank at Emory University, 1975-77, for which he was the first individual to personally obtain over 500 eye donors and he and his wife, Georgia, were guests of Congressman Jack Flynt and of President Jimmy Carter at the White House.

Mr. Mallory was active in many hereditary and patriotic organizations including: Plantagenet Society; Society Descendants of King William the Conqueror; Somerset Chapter Magna Carta Barons; Knights of the Garter; Americans of Royal Descent; Colonial Order of the Crown; Order of Washington; Sons of the American Revolution; Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; Huguenot Society Founders of Manakintowne in the Colony of Virginia; and was eligible for many others including the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge.

He was a life long member of First Baptist Church of LaGrange where he served as a Deacon; Chairman of the Insurance Committee; and Member of the Pulpit, Building, and Usher Committees.

He was a Director of the Adult Sunday School and a member of the Thornton Williams-Pilots Sunday School Class, which he served as Past Outreach Leader. He was also a Scout Master of the Baptist Cub Scout program.

Mr. Mallory is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Georgia Hammett, whom he married in LaGrange on June 29, 1952.

Five children surviving: Richard H., Jr. and Dale Mallory; Paul S. and Jan Mallory; and William L. 'saBill' Mallory, all of LaGrange; Robert W. and Heidi Mallory of Locust Grove; and Georgia M. and Ken Fortner of Dacula.

His grandchildren are: Joanna L. Mallory; Matthew H. Mallory; Paul S. Mallory, Jr.; Pierson Mallory; Emily H. Mallory ; Robert W. Mallory, Jr.; William H. Fortner, ; and Jacob H. Fortner. He is also survived by his twin sister, Rachel Mallory Jones and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana, a brother, Arthur E., Jr.; and a sister, Alice Mallory Fletcher.

Richard H. Mallory was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and a grateful son. Since 1974, he spent one to two hours or more each morning and night in prayer and meditation.

He believed in a balanced life of right living and daily prayer and meditation.

He always gave God the honor and glory, realizing all blessings came from Him.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Baxter officiating with burial to follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
